The torch’s flames fume hotter and brighter than ever this year as Friday September 19th marks the first house day of the school year! The four hopeful houses (Hanuman, Hongmeas, Neakreach, and Voroman) were presented with a variety of challenging competitions. This marks the beginning of the fight for the 3rd annual house cup of the 25-26 academic year!
The first major house contest was an ‘EWIS Idol’ competition, which was influenced by American Idol and America’s Got Talent. Though, I’m not sure if any of the contestants were worthy of Simon Cowell’s golden buzzer.
Nobody warned me that when I stepped inside the assembly hall, I and everybody else purchased exclusive tickets to see some of the most thrilling performances. All which included a team of dazzling vocalists, striking fashion icons, and meaningful moments which all culminated in fantastic shows from each house. We were introduced to twisted variations of popular artists and festive celebrations from the debut of Neakreach’s Frontstreet boys, to Voroman’s inflatable Santa Claus, and elves dancing up and down to the song ‘Firework’ by Katy Perry. The high school teams flattered us more with Neakreach who took on a special Chinese Frozen spin on ‘Let it go.’ Hanuman proudly presented the EWIS American flag with our favorite pop artists Jay-Z and Britney Spears.
As our head judges Mr. Tim, Mr. Padric, and Mr. Fechter concluded that all performances were spectacular and entertaining. Mr. Padric quoted that “It was the highest level of performance we’ve ever seen in the school and it was impossible to pick a winner.” I mean, we have to all agree that performers from all houses truly gave it their all and displayed their own unique sense of creativity, teamwork, and talent. However, there could only be one winner that is awarded with the 1st ever East-West Golden Microphone. And that was proudly presented to Neakreach for their outstanding performance of both middle school and high school teams. Great job!
Later that afternoon, all the houses transitioned from pop star fashionistas to dedicated athletes by competing in the annual volleyball tournament. All teams consisted of talented middle school and high school athletes determined to win for the pride of their house. Impressive athletic skills were shown firsthand as the starting match with Hanuman against Neakreach was played. Hanuman fought hard and defeated the green dragon, making it to the finals. The second game was a heated match with Voroman and Hongmeas as the red wolf howled its way through the match. The team of golden swans were beaten in a swift chase, having the pack successfully stepping into the finals as well.
Last but not least was the heated volleyball battle between Voroman and Hanuman, a long and intense game as both teams were hungry for the 1st place win. Serves were aced, spikes were precise, and teamwork was evident. In the end, Voroman’s name was labelled as the winner.
To wrap up a competitive yet joyful series of house games, the current house standings were released by Mr. Tim LaRocco. As of now, Neakreach currently holds the 1st place title from their hardworking performance in both competitions. All houses rested their mascots as we approached the Pchum Ben holiday.
Hopefully once we come back, the four houses are rejuvenated and ready for the next series of house events. According to Mr. Tim’s email, it seems that the teams will have to face a week of some mathematical challenges coming sooner than we thought. Next up, the mathletes? Stay tuned for more house recaps!
