Closing the show of New York Fashion Week (NYFW) ‘SS26, a brand debuts with a collection titled ‘Spirit of the Forgotten.’ One-by-one each model makes their mark cascading down the catwalk. The runway is ornamented with intricately designed gowns in a myriad of shades, all glittering brightly. This was not merely a fashion show, but an art exhibition.
From mini dresses to caped floor length gowns, this variety in style was bound to have at least one piece that appealed to each member of the audience. However, there was one piece that made a distinct impression. Model Mélia Constantin was ordained in a 28 kilogram dress. The gown, fittingly named ‘Time Voyage’, was intricately embellished with beads and crystals, taking the audience on a journey through time with one impeccable silhouette.
After this spectacle, there is no doubt that ALmée Couture has made history in the Cambodian fashion industry as the first Cambodian designer to present at NYFW. Founded in 2024, ALmée Couture is a Cambodian luxury brand led by CEO & Founder Taing Sokhang. According to the ALmée Couture website, the couture house aims “to merge Cambodian heritage with modern artistry.” by creating timeless pieces that “celebrate craftsmanship, cultural storytelling, and innovation on the global stage.”
ALmée Couture’s unveiling at NYFW has garnered unwavering support from the Khmer youth. Through the pieces, Cambodians are able to see a reflection of their heritage and culture. Especially in the designs: ‘Dawn of Angkor’, ‘Ancestral Grace’, and ‘Golden Emblem.’ Each dress clearly paints an homage to Khmer culture with the flowing skirts, ancestral motifs, 3D insignias, and nods to Khmer myths and history.
However, for Taing Sokhang the collection, ‘Spirit of the Forgotten’, is not only a tribute to Cambodia, but one for her late father who passed away as she landed in New York. She stated that the grief she experienced pushed her into becoming a creative trailblazer, “making this runway presentation a celebration of his enduring love.”
This highlights that the runway was more than a debut, but an ode to resilience. Taing Sokhang puts it as “a reminder that even the most distant memories can rise again with new power, shimmering under the spotlight.” Setting a tone of brilliance.
